Building Bridges between God and Man

Three Levels of Relationship

Bonnie Morris

With so many examples of the three realms, I would just like to add this one.

(Depth of Relationship with God)

#1. Communication

#2. Communion

#3. Union

There are three levels of growth in relationships.  The first level is communication.  If I am going to have a relationship with you, I start by introducing myself and you are going to tell me who you are.   This is communication!  I hear you and you hear me.  Both parties speak.  This is how a relationship begins.  This is how it began in the garden.  God said, “Do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, of blessing and calamity”.  He was telling them they could communicate with the tree of life, but they were not to communicate with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, blessing and calamity.

The second level is communion.  Communion is a level where you begin to know me well enough that you will understand how I am going to feel about things.

The third level is union, and union is the vision that God had in the beginning for each of us.  In union, you not only understand how the other person feels about things, but you also feel and understand the same thing.

Let’s talk about communion....

For years I attended, observed, and participated in Communion – The Lord’s supper in denominational churches!  I could never understand why I always felt like it didn’t mean what it seemed it should mean to me.  The words that were shared over the table always seemed like ritualistic expressions and I could never find any tangible presence of the Lord in it all.

I was aware of the scripture that Jesus Himself spoke to his disciples in Matthew 26:29: But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

It has taken me years to see the reality of this scripture and its’ intended application to the day in which we are living.  Jesus was stating that when the Kingdom came, He would be there to drink it anew with us.  It would change things from a MEMORIAL SUPPER to a VICTORY CELEBRATION!!!

Romans 14:17: For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.  Is the Kingdom here?  Do you experience righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost?

Since the kingdom is here, the next question has to be:

Is Jesus here?  Colossians 1:27 : To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Since he is in you, we have to conclude that He came back and is here with us NOW.

Since the Kingdom is here and so is the King, it would be fair to say He is here to drink of communion with us “anew in the Kingdom”.  It would also be fair to say that today it should be a CELEBRATION, not a MEMORIAL supper.

Let me give a personal example that can apply here:  My earthly Father has passed from this life.  Every year on his birthday I sing happy birthday in remembrance of him.  If he were to show up on one of his birthdays, I would celebrate with him as he would be in the same room with me.  Is Jesus in the same room with you?  If He is, why would you take communion in remembrance of Him?  And if you do, what else do you do without Him?  See the problem!

So, why did Paul give instructions to participate in communion “in remembrance:?

Jesus returned on the day of Pentecost.  He came fulfilling the type of the OT High Priest who had to show himself the second time for everyone to know that the sacrifice had been accepted; Jesus showed Himself again without sin the second time.  When the word said He was coming soon, that is exactly what it meant. SOON.  Not 1000’s of years later.

However, the setting up of the Kingdom did not take place until the Old Kingdom had passed away. In the interim period, everything was still a memorial feast.  Remember, Jesus said He would drink it with us anew in the Kingdom.  The new Kingdom was soon to be established by the overthrow of Jerusalem and the old kingdom temple with all its rituals and rites.  This did not happen until the Roman army completely destroyed the city to the point that not one stone was left upon the other.  You could not even tell there had been a city there.  This did not happen for approximately 30 years from the time that Paul gave the instructions for remembering.  The actual date was 70AD.

Now, the old is passed away and the new begins.  Jesus now drinks with us “ANEW” in the kingdom.  This is what is so wonderful about communion today.  He is with us.  He is present.  It is a victory celebration.  It doesn’t require an actual service in church to commune with Jesus.  We sup with him daily in the spirit, so even the participation in an outward ceremony means nothing if we are not in communion with Him on a daily basis.
